A Pathogenic Mechanism Potentially Operative in Multiple Progressive Diseases and Its Therapeutic Implications

This month’s Editor’s choice article is an extensive review on intracrines and their implications in disease.   Diseases where intracrines have been implicated include systolic heart failure, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic nephropathy and some common neurodegenerative disorders.  The review outlines the potential for this pathway to cause disease and suggests that if the suggestions in the article are correct, the potential for pharmacologic manipulation of this pathway to prevent/treat a variety of diseases may be possible.
